Outreach Volunteer Opportunities

Mercy Outreach

The Parents Association offers many outreach opportunities throughout the year.

Family to Family

Each year, the Parents Association’s Outreach Committee compiles a list of families who are willing to assist another family who may find themselves in need during the year. For example, if a parent gets sick or a grandparent requires extra attention of parents, we are there to help the Waldron family with meals or other assistance. All assistance is provided on a confidential basis.

Most often, we prepare a schedule of meal deliveries (usually to school in the morning) to help the family. Your involvement is usually very limited - we don’t put too much responsibility on any one family. When the Parents Association receives a request for assistance, you'll receive an email asking if you can help out. All assistance is confidential.

St. Columba Shelter

You have the chance to make a difference in someone’s life by volunteering at St. Columba’s Shelter for men, located between 41st and 42nd Streets on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. Saint Columba is one of Project Home’s ‘Safe Haven Residences’ that provides shelter and meals to the city’s most vulnerable male homeless population. The service we provide is a much needed one in these tougher economic times. You can learn more about Project Home and the shelter by clicking here.

This opportunity will require only limited time – enough to make part of a meal and about an hour at the shelter. Children and families prepare and serve meals to the residents of the shelter starting at 6:30 p.m. Each family is asked to bring enough of one food item to serve 20 men. Food items include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, dinner rolls, potatoes and beverages, and a dessert. Montessori participates by providing the salad. Our children do the majority of the work. Parking is relatively easy – both on the street and in the car wash parking area next door to the shelter.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

Every year, WMA collects food from our families to put together Thanksgiving dinner baskets for families in need. We are looking for drivers, basket organizers, coordinators and loading help for the Thanksgiving Food Drive

Christmas Giving Tree Volunteers

The Christmas Giving Tree has a long history at WMA. WMA collects wish lists and names from our outreach partners and WMA families generously buy the gifts for our friends in need. We also need drivers, gift tag writers, gift packets and organizers for the Christmas Giving Tree. Please consider lending a hand.

Martin Luther King Day of Service

The Parents Association Outreach Committee sponsors a Day of Service on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 21, for all of our students, families, and faculty. Again this year, we will be sewing pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer, an organization that is devoted to “giving sick kids a reason to smile… one pillowcase at a time.” ConKerr's mission is to make hospitalized children feel special while battling life-changing illness. Learn more about ConKerr Cancer.

On MLK Day, we'll meet in the Perry Memorial Library to sew pillowcases from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Parents Association will supply all of the fabric and instructions. We’ll need you to participate and to assist, especially with the operation of the sewing machines! This project is perfect for all students of all ages. Even our youngest students have enjoyed using the sewing machines (under supervision) and making something special for a sick child. We also prepare handmade cards to go with each pillowcase. We hope you will join us for this special activity!

Please continue to look back to this page as we add new Outreach opportunities. Many thanks for all our help in making these Outreach activities a success!
